Trees for Life is committed to creating nature-rich landscapes that include and support people, and the charity is now recognised as one of the leading experts in wild forest restoration in Scotland.
Rewilding the Scottish Highlands
For over 30 years, Trees for Life has been working tirelessly to rewild the Scottish Highlands and restore Scotland’s ancient Caledonian forest and its wildlife. The charity was founded by Alan Watson Featherstone, after discovering that Scotland’s great forest had been reduced to about one per cent of its original size.
The charity focuses its work in its Dundreggan estate, and in Glen Affric, where an important fragment of Caledonian forest remains. Through a programme of practical action and natural regeneration, Trees for Life has brought Scots pine back to areas it had been lost for generations and grown rare trees such as aspen and mountain top willows and birches. The charity also works to foster biodiversity and bring more life back to the landscape, from the iconic red squirrel to the elusive lynx.

Dundreggan: In the heart of the Highlands
In 2008, Trees for Life bought the 10,000-acre estate at Dundreggan in Glenmoriston, situated just eight miles from the shores of Loch Ness. The charity’s rewilding work has allowed important fragments of the Caledonian forest to recover, providing a habitat for over 4,000 species of plants and animals, including golden eagles and black grouse.

Dundreggan Rewilding Centre
Trees for Life opened its beautiful Dundreggan Rewilding Centre in April 2023. A world first, the centre celebrates the close connections between people and nature and is a gateway to Dundreggan’s unique landscape and rich natural and cultural heritage.
Laurelin Cummins-Fraser, Dundreggan Rewilding Centre Director said: “The Rewilding Centre helps people access nature and enjoy its wellbeing benefits. Visitors can explore Scotland’s Caledonian forest, discover centuries of Gaelic history, connect with a landscape undergoing transformation through rewilding and experience what makes Dundreggan so special.”
Treading lightly
From its inception, sustainability has been central to the Rewilding Centre’s efforts to ensure a low-carbon visitor centre and accommodation building. The project was supported by the Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme (LCITP), and an integrated renewable energy system was installed for both buildings, including air source heat pumps, solar heating, and electric vehicle charging points.
Existing buildings on the estate were also retrofitted with energy-efficient measures. Dundreggan hopes to lead the way as a low-emissions Highland estate that can bring additional benefits to the local community and economy.
