Event: AGM 2023

In August 2023 (17 and 18 August), the United Kingdom and Ireland Association of Forensic Toxicologists (UKIAFT) brought together 63 toxicologists from across the UK and Ireland to Dundee for its Annual General Meeting, which focussed on recent developments and the future of the sector.

The event, which was hosted by the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science and held at the University of Dundee, featured a wide range of keynote speakers from organisations and academic institutions as well as the Scottish Minister for Drugs and Alcohol Policy, Elena Whitham MSP, who addressed delegates in the opening session.

The UKIAFT AGM programme provided delegates with an opportunity to learn and discuss the latest ideas and research within the sector, how to prepare for future drug trends, toxicology as a tool for harm reduction and alternative matrices and new methods and techniques.

As part of the programme, UKIAFT held a Conference Dinner onboard RRS Discovery, moored alongside Discovery Point, which was built in Dundee and took scientists to Antarctica in 1901.

Councillor John Alexander, Leader of Dundee City Council, said: "An important part of Dundee's journey has been realising what it has to offer. We have gone through a somewhat challenging few decades, but we have set ourselves the task of providing opportunities for people within the city and elsewhere with tangible links to research in practical application. We embed scientific innovations and research in our practice, delivering tangible outcomes."
