Last month, Perthshire Business Tourism Group announced Calum Crichton, Director of Sales & Marketing at Murrayshall Country Estate, as the new Chair for Meetings Perthshire.

Meetings Perthshire is a membership-based marketing group and was formally launched in 2015. The group includes some of Perthshire's leading venues and businesses that operate within the business tourism markets.

We caught up with Calum to discuss his career to date and what his mains goals are for the tourism group in 2022.

Tell us about your career within the events sector?

I got my first taste of the events and hospitality sector whilst I was studying law at university. I began working as Front of House staff for G1 Group (now Scotsman Hospitality), which looks after a portfolio of venues across Scotland. After I graduated, I was promoted to Sales & Marketing coordinator and became responsible for the sales, marketing, and event management of the groups' three properties in St. Andrews.

In 2018, I joined the sales team at Holiday Inn Express Dundee as Sales Manager, where I began working collaboratively with local partnering organisations to help boost tourism in the city of Dundee and the surrounding areas, including the Dundee & Angus Visitor Accommodation Association; the Dundee Tourism Action Group and Visit Dundee.

In 2021, I joined the team at Murrayshall Country Estate as Director of Sales & Marketing. Alongside this work, I run a freelance marketing agency.

What are your key responsibilities as Chair of Meetings Perthshire?

In my role as Chair, I will be a key representative and spokesperson for Meetings Perthshire. Through this I will support the organisation in the creation of new strategies and events for our dedicated members, to help promote our region to the domestic and international markets.

Are there any exciting plans in the pipeline for Meetings Perthshire?

We've had a very busy start to 2022! So far, we have attended four virtual events including EVENTIT and MeetGB where we had the opportunity to speak with buyers from across the UK, Europe, Asia and North America. We will be taking part in more tradeshows throughout the year, both in-person and digitally, to ensure that the region is well represented and to demonstrate to the marketplace that Perthshire is the ideal place to host events.

In 2022, we will also look to grow our membership, with a particular focus on venues. Over the past few months, we have seen significant growth in our supplier membership and hope to continue this.

As the meetings industry moves back to a more 'normal' working state we will be on the road meeting members and making new connections and supporting them on their continued road to recovery.
